Come discover Paris and Bourbon County, Kentucky.

Located just fifteen miles northeast of Lexington is Paris, Kentucky, a city with small town charm surrounded by scenic horse farms and historic sites.  Traveling to Paris along US 68/27, the four-lane highway, visitors can enjoy the panoramic views of stately horse farms and manicured pastures. 

Marketed under its logo of “Horses, History and Hospitality”, one soon easily understands why these three categories characterize this area.

If you are interested in visiting historic attractions, it is best to call in advance for hours of operation.

Cane Ridge Meeting House, located on State Hwy 537, is open during the winter season when the curators are available. The Cane Ridge Museum is closed during the winter season. Please call (859) 987-5350 for information.

Hopewell Museum, 800 Pleasant Street, is open Wednesday through Saturday from 12 noon to 5 pm and on Sunday from 2 pm to 4 pm. Stop by and view the interesting exhibits of the museum. For more information on current and upcoming exhibits, call 859-987-7274.

Duncan Tavern, 323 High Street, is a three-story tavern built in 1788 by Major Joseph Duncan four years before Kentucky became a state. Famous visitors included Daniel Boone and Simon Kenton. Duncan Tavern is closed from December 15 through April 9. It is open in March for socials and group tours by appointment. Call (859) 987-1788 for information. The John Fox, Jr. Genealogical Library, located in the basement of the Ducan Tavern, is also closed during this period.

An indoor visit to the Bourbon County Courthouse should include a look at the interior of the dome with its murals depicting the agricultural life in the county as experienced one hundred years ago.

The Wallis Arboretum, located at 616 Pleasant Street. The arboretum is open free to the public during daylight hours year-round. For more information, call 859-987-6158.

If you are looking for a good book or in need of doing some research, stop by the Paris/Bourbon County Public Library located at 701 High Street. The building is a Carnegie building that is over one hundred years old and is an architectural beauty.

One of only 13 covered bridges left in the state can be found in Bourbon County on KY 3118. Located on Colville Road is the Colville Covered Bridge. It measures 124 feet long and 18 feet wide and crosses Hinkston Creek. It is open to regular traffic. Driving through this “timbered tunnel” is an enjoyable experience.

If shopping is on your agenda, Paris' uniquely beautiful and architecturally interesting Main Street offers a wide variety of choices. Eating establishments offer a variety of cuisine that appeal to any taste and budget.

September 25 – 26, 2009: Second Annual Bourbon County Secretariat Festival at Bourbon County Fairgrounds. On September 25, make plans to attend a dinner at Migdalia’s (509 Main Street) honoring Ms. Penny Chenery and Mrs. Verna Lehmann (owner of Derby Winner Dust Commander). Cocktail reception is from 6 – 7 pm with dinner from 7 – 9 pm. Saturday: September 26: 8:00 am: Big Red 5K Foot Race/Walk. Gates to Festival open at 9:00 AM. Admission: $10.00 per carload or $5.00 per person. 12 and under free. Lots of activities, equine demonstrations, miniature horse show, carriage demonstrations, activities for children, Secretariat Gallery with displays of local and regional artists, silent auction, Autograph session with Ms. Chenery, Mrs. Lehmann and other racing celebrities. Secretariat Look Alike Contest. Claiborne Farm Tours from 9 am – 1 pm. $20.00 per person.
